Can Olive Oil Stand the Heat?

Q: I've seen news reports saying olive oil loses its healthy qualities when you heat it, and that using it as a salad oil is best—is that true? Also, how long can I keep it before it goes bad?
— Dilraj Kahlon, Delta, British Columbia

A: Like all oils, olive oil is a mixture of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated fatty acids. What makes olive oil so healthful is its high percentage of oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that helps protect the heart and in some research seems to lower cancer risk. The amount of oleic acid varies from 55 percent to 85 percent of the total fat content, depending on the type of olives and the site and soil in which they were grown. But oleic acid isn't the only reason to like olive oil: It also contains heart-healthy flavonoid antioxidants and vitamin E. Extra-virgin olive oils—they're made from the first pressing of the choicest olives—contain the highest levels of these beneficial substances.

An olive offering to Osteoarthritis Rheumatoid Arthritis

Are there alternatives to glucosamine-chondroitin therapy for arthritis?

Olive phenols contain biologic response modifiers
that can help reduce the inflammation associated
with arthritis. – AP

IN Malaysia, an estimated 60% of the population will have some form of arthritis by the age of 60, particularly osteoarthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), on the other hand, affects a smaller percentage of our population and can affect all age groups.

The most effective method for osteoarthritis pain relief is any treatment that reduces inflammation. One class of treatment called “biologic response modifier” (BRM) reduces inflammation in the joints by blocking the action of a substance called tumour necrosis factor (TNF). TNF is a protein of the body’s immune system that triggers inflammation during normal immune responses; however, when overproduced, TNF can lead to excessive inflammation such as that experienced by patients with arthritis both RA and OA.

Amongst these natural BRMs, the most researched and best documented is olive phenols. Although its chemical structure is quite different from the anti-inflammatory compounds in non-steroidal drugs, olive phenol’s anti-inflammatory component has a similar effect.

A 50 gram dose (about four tablespoons) of extra-virgin olive oil supplies enough phenols to produce an effect equivalent to that of about 10% of the ibuprofen dose recommended for adult pain relief.

One single capsule contains the phenolic quantity you find in 6oz of extra virgin olive oil. The high potency BRM and pain relief effect from olive is delivered to the human body without fats and calories.

THE OLIVE TREE & IT’S OIL

THE OLIVE TREE & IT’S OIL

The olive tree is the most cited tree in recorded literature and has been cultivated since ancient times. The roots of the olive tree are so extensive and strong that in times of drought, when other trees die, the olive tree is still standing because it draws from deep within the earth when the heavens withhold their life-giving water.

Rasulullah (pbuh) has said: “Use olive oil and anoint yourself with it, because it is ‘from a blessed tree’”

The local application of olive oil or the water extracted from the crushed olive oil leaves is effective on boils, rashes and itching. Olive oil prevents dandruff, moisturises skin, soothes aches and pains and aids digestion. Massage of olive oil with common salt over the gums is a remedy for several diseases of gums and
teeth. Imam Ali (pbuh) has said the people who use olive oil and vinegar will not be afflicted with poverty.

It is called "liquid gold." In ancient Greece, athletes ritually rubbed it all over their body. Olive oil has been more than mere food to the peoples of the Mediterranean; it has been medicinal and an endless source of fascination and wonder.

Imam Ali (A.S.) says have vinegar protects your heart.
