Britain In Palestine

A research and exhibition project on British rule in Palestine 1917-1948 by the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum

The story of the British Mandate for Palestine is one of the most controversial episodes in the history of the British Empire. When the British departed Palestine in 1948 they abandoned a country at war; British imperial strategies had denied the country’s inhabitants democratic government, and ignited a desperate struggle between Arabs and Jews for their future in Palestine. Today the Mandate’s legacy of conflict continues to reverberate around the world.
